Dean Paul Martin was an American singer, actor, and comedian. He was born Dino Paul Crocetti on June 7, 1917, and died on December 25, 1995. He was one of the most famous and long-lasting entertainers in the United States in the middle of the 20th century. People called him “The King of Cool.” Martin got his big break in 1946 when he and performer Jerry Lewis went on tour as Martin and Lewis. They used to play in bars and were later on the radio, TV, and in movies.
In 1956, when the relationship with Lewis had ended in bitterness, Martin struck out on his own as a performer and actor. Martin became well-known as a performer after he recorded several modern songs and classics from the Great American Songbook. He was a member of the Rat Pack, a group of famous performers that included Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and himself, and rose to prominence in Las Vegas.
Martin’s singing and comedy talents took center stage on his own television variety show, The Dean Martin Show, which he hosted beginning in 1965. Celebrities, comedians, and even politicians would go to see him as roastmaster on the long-running Dean Martin Celebrity Roast from 1974 to 1984. Martin had an extensive career, which saw him participate in 85 films and TV shows and perform on concert stages, in nightclubs, and in audio recordings.
